My dealer who is one hell of a mechanic said don't even think about checking the valves but about every 5000-7000 miles in motard form. For a woods bike maybe once a year, twice if you're really putting in a lot of miles. Cold starting difficulties could be the jetting. Most times they should start after 2-3 kicks.
Buying the 500 EXC and then converting it is going to be $$,$$$; you can get a KTM 690 SMC that is already set up for Supermoto from the factory and has far longer maintenance intervals than the 500 EXC. And for street tarding will be just as fun. If you want to learn dirt bike riding just add a 2nd bike like a KDX200 or an XR250 for $2,000.

The 250L has an oil capacity of 1.8L, meanwhile the 450L, a bike with 200ccs more, has about 1.4L of oil capacity. So with a much higher output engine, that will be ridden hard, and will generate more heat, and has even less oil capacity, the oil change intervals need to be shorter as the available oil is broken down much quicker.
Posted October 20, 2015. If you change the oil on a regular basis (500-900) miles you can go an easy 6000+ miles before ever tearing into it. Valves need to be checked every 1000 or so miles. The more miles the more often they need to be checked. Mine get checked sometimes every oil change.
